Navsari’s DNMS Hospital Celebrates 103!

On 17th January, 2017, The Dorabji Nanabhoy Mehta Sarvajanik Hospital (DNMSH), known as Navsari’s ‘Parsee Hospital’, celebrated its 103rd anniversary with a simple cake-cutting ceremony organized by the staff members. Serving people since January 15, 1915, DNMSH has risen from humble beginnings as a Lying-In Hospital with a capacity of 44 beds to an established and much sought after 136-bed Multi-specialty Hospital, housing various departments including Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics, Gynaecology, ENT, Paediatrics, Pathology, Radiology, Dialysis (10 units), ICU, Dental unit and also its own Cardiac Ambulance and a Morgue.

Catering mainly to the South Gujarat population, DNMSH has a Special Ward for Parsi patients providing medical treatment and dialysis at subsidised rates, with free in-house medicines up to Rs. 5000/- for all Parsi patients. Additionally, free treatment is given to all Parsi women for Pre and Post maternity treatment and to the residents of Bai Dosibai Kotwal Parsi Boys Orphanage.

In keeping with the declining Parsi population, the then Trustees, being visionaries, had the institution converted from a ‘Lying In’ facility to a ‘Sarvajanik Hospital’. Recently the hospital management joined hands with Parzor Foundation, New Delhi and WZO Trust Funds, for providing cashless treatment to beneficiaries of South Gujarat via the government-funded Jiyo Parsi Programme. During the financial year 2015 – 2016, the hospital provided financial subsidy amounting to Rs. 38,02,216/-  to poor patients from their Poor Patients Relief Fund.

Recently, on January 15, 2017, DNMSH inaugurated its new wing, ‘Seth Faramroz Gotla Wing’. It comprises an ultramodern 16-beds ICU-Ward, with 4 rooms dedicated to burns, dialysis and infections, named after Late Tehmina and Jehangirji S Sooi, donated by their children Sam, Freny, Katy and Dolly; a state-of-the-art CT Scan Unit named after late Zarin Neville Sarkari, donated by Neville Homi Sarkari (USA); and an OPD and Trauma Ward named after late Jashwantrai Lalbhai Naik, donated by his wife Dr. Madhurika Naik. The total cost of this excellent project was Rs.5.75 Crores, of which Rs.3.30 Crores were received as donation and the balance Rs.2.45 Crores were used from the Hospital’s Reserve Fund.

The Hospital’s dynamic Board of Trustees are Farrokh Mehta, Malcolm Mehta, Dinshaw Tamboly, Dinyar Mehta, Dara Deboo and Freny Goiporiya, ably assisted by a vibrant Managing Committee comprising Rohinton Contractor, Cyrus Vandriwala, Aspi Ambapardiwala, Sharmin Tamboly and Jimmy Mehta. The Hospital Management requests charitable institutions and individuals to extend their support and donate to the Building Fund and The Instrument Fund to enhance the qualitative service that is provided to all without distinction of colour, caste or creed, by helping procure the following instruments required currently for the new ICU Wing:
