Dhobi Ghat

Located next to Mahalaxmi railway station, Dhobi Ghat is the most popular open-air manual laundry in Mumbai. Built during the British Raj in 1890, the washers or dhobis, wash over a lakh pieces of clothing daily mainly from Mumbai’s hotels and hospitals. In 2013, World Records India and World Amazing Records bestowed the World Record Certificate to Dhobi Kalyan and Audhyogik Vikas Co-op. Society Ltd for the most clothes people hand-washed simultaneously, at a single location.

 

Umarkhadi

Umarkhadi, located in South Mumbai between Byculla and Pydhonie, is known for housing St. Joseph’s Parish where a white cross in its church compound had started dripping water, thus becoming a major sighting for tourists. Umarkhadi also housed a jail – known as the Common Prison consisting of the civil jail, the criminal jail as well as a hospital with 32 beds – occupying a total of 10,674 square yards.
