UCSD New Science Building Named ‘Tata Hall Of Sciences’

In an exemplary gesture of philanthropy, The Tata Trusts in 2016, gifted $70 million to the University of California (UC), San Diego (SD), USA, to set up an institute for Genetics and Society. On 12th September, 2017, the University declared that the new building for the divisions of biological and physical sciences has been named ‘The Tata Hall for the Sciences’, as a mark of gratitude towards the enormous donation by the Tata Trusts. According to the university report, UC San Diego Chancellor, Pradeep Khosla said, “It is my privilege to dedicate this building in recognition of the Tata Trusts’ leadership and collaboration with UC San Diego, and the Tata family’s pioneering philanthropy and singular impact to bring about societal change. This building will embody the spirit of the many shared values of UC San Diego and the Tata Trusts to benefit our global society.”

The naming event also witnessed the announcement of four inaugural chair holders of the Tata Chancellor’s Endowed Professorships. According to the university’s report, Ex-Chairman of Tata Trust, Sir Ratan Tata said, “I am very proud to be associated with this great institution. What we are doing is a big thing for mankind in our part of the world and I look forward to this involvement as just a first part of what we can do together.” Currently under construction, the building is expected to be completed by 2018.
