Let’s Play It Safe

Dear Readers,

While the past month has seen a steady rise in the number of H3N2 flu (influenza) cases in the city, a couple of days ago, the Union Health Secretary – Rajesh Bhushan, reported that India was also witnessing a significant daily increase in the number of COVID-19 cases. In his media briefing, which was held within hours post PM Modi’s high-level meeting on COVID, the seasonal flu and India’s public health preparedness, he stated that the states with the maximum jump in COVID cases were Maharashtra, Gujarat and Kerala.

While some are viewing this as a potentially global resurgence of COVID (with nearly a lakh new cases being detected everyday), most of the recent deaths recorded are those of individuals with co-morbidities (diabetes, coronary and pulmonary ailments, BP and to an extent, obesity). Though for now, this increase is looked upon as more of a cause of concern and not panic, it looks like it’s time to reconsider reinstating a bit of that COVID-appropriate behaviour – mainly avoiding crowded areas and wearing masks in public places – especially for the elderly and those with co-morbidities.

It would serve us all well to not let history repeat – let’s be smarter than that and play it safe. Let’s ensure to take the needed precautions and be in a state of preparedness… best put in the words of the great Benjamin Franklin: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” Even as the unlearnt lessons of last time’s failures continue to haunt us, let’s ensure we play it safe this time!
