Film Review: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

Three directors for a single Marvel super-hero flick! Even so, too many cooks haven’t spoilt the plot! First noticed in the comic-book in 2011 and now scripted by Rothman with Phil Lord, the new character, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) is an Afro-American-Latino Brooklyn teenager transformed into his super-hero avatar, when he’s bitten by a radioactive spider.

The earlier Spiderman, Peter Parker, is killed by crime lord Wilson Fisk’s (voice of Liev Schrieber) henchmen. Enter Miles, the new super-hero. The latest Marvel offering has five origin characters and sub-stories – Given Stacy aka Spiderwoman (Hailee Stienfield), Noir Spiderman (Nicholas Cage), Demi Parker (Kimiko Glenn) and Peter Porker aka Spider-Ham, apart from Fisk.

The first animated Spiderman film, it’s come a long way since Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland graced the big screen and Kirsten Dunstan was kissed hanging outside down. The five dimensions – referred to numerous times during the film – gives the film a multi-dimensional feel. And don’t let the jerkiness on the screen fool you – the film has been intentionally shot in 12-frames-per-second mode. What makes this one stand out, is the almost credible writing and the humane touch it provides. The simplicity of the plot and story makes it a kids-within-an-adults film. Will subsequent Spiderman films continue with this altered theme or will it revert to the non-animated version remains to be seen.
