VP Naidu Launches Postal Stamp And Book Commemorating 100 Years of Jamshedpur

– Praises Tata Group’s Ethical Business Practices –

 On 17thFebruary, 2020, M Venkaiah Naidu, Hon’ble Vice President of India, released a commemorative postal stamp and a coffee table book at the Commemorative Function of ‘100 Years of Jamshedpur’, at the Tata Auditorium – XLRI, where he was presiding as the Chief Guest. Also present were Jharkhand’s Governor – DroupadiMurmu; Minister of Welfare -Champai Sorenand Chief Post Master General -Anil Kumar.

Addressing the gathering at VP Naidu described Jamshedpur as India’s first planned industrial city that had earned the distinction of becoming the country’s role model for sustainable urban and industrial development. He greatly appreciated the Tata Group for its ethical approach to business and commended Tata Steel for its significant contribution towards improving the quality of life of the community for over 100 years. He lauded the Tata Group for being synonymous with high ethical standards and the pioneering spirit of entrepreneurship, saying how every industry should adopt the ethical standards set by the Group.

VP Naidu also hailed the unparalleled role of JRD Tata in setting up India’s very first steel plant at Jamshedpur, extolling him as not only a doyen of the Indian industry, but also a visionary leader who foresaw a rising India.

DroupadiMurmu, Governor of Jharkhand, shared how Jamshedpur, over the last century, had transformed into a populous and economically-prosperous city. She emphasized the need to preserve, protect and nurture its rich tribal culture and heritage, with “focus on the preservation of tribal languages, practices and social ethos.”

Recalling how the then Governor General of India, Lord Chelmsford, in 1919, had rechristened ‘Sakchi’ as Jamshedpur in honour of its Founder -JamsetjiNusserwanji Tata, T V Narendran, CEO and MD of Tata Steel, thanked the Government of India for releasing a commemorative postal stamp to mark the centenary of the naming of the city.

Earlier in the day, VP Naidu and Governor Murmu visited the Centre for Excellence (CFE), and planted banyan tree saplings, as part of the walkthrough exhibition on the 100-year journey of Tata Worker’s Union (TWU), led by R Ravi Prasad, President – TWU. TWU is the first union in the country to complete 100 years having been built on the fundamental principle and spirit of ‘working together’. They were also shown the Tata Steel Archives – India’s first business archives – at CFE.

The Tata Steel Group is among the top global steel companies with an annual crude steel capacity of 33 million tonnes per annum. Along with its subsidiaries and associates, it is spread across five continents with an employee base of over 65,000,and is ranked as one of the world’s most geographically-diversified steel producers. It recorded a consolidated turnover of US $22.67 billion in FY ending March 31, 2019.
