Film Review: SAAT UCHAKKEY

A film which was held up by the censors for close to 3 years due to the profligacy of its profanity is bound to be a head-turner. For one not used to the old Delhi or North Indian rural ‘tapori’ language, this film may be a revelation, or fill one with a sense of revulsion and repugnance – depending on how you view it.
“Saat Uchakkey” has Pappi (Manoj Bajpayee), Jaggi (Vijay Raaz in a fine performance), Sona (Aditi Sharma) and four others as the gang of seven small-time, double-dealing racketeers. Add Anupam Kher, Kay Kay Menon and Annu Kapoor and you ought to have had a superlative cast, at least histrionically. But sadly, that is not to be. Anupam Kher reminds you of his roles of the 90s where he indulged in buffoonery and the only apparent reason he accepted this role was probably the pay cheque.

The ending – a long-drawn-out half hour – and the over-abundance of gestures and cuss words (which would render BC and MC obsolete), overshadow the wafer-thin plot. Annu Kapoor as the preacher pops up on screen when least expected. How one wishes Sanjeev Sharma and producer Neeraj Pandey had paid heed to his sermons.
