know-your-bombay-1Bellasis Road (Parel Road to Bellasis Bridge):

Bellasis Road was established in 1793 AD, by the poor driven from the city of Surat in that year of famine, out of funds raised by public subscription, and takes its name from Major-General Bellasis, under whose order it was constructed. Bellasis Road today, the drive towards Scandal Point at Breach Candy, is in the recollection of many now living a small straggling, uneven, jolting pathway, got up by General Bellasis of the Artillery, to suit his convenience, as he lived in the proximity of the famed Mahalaxmi and from thereafter he was seen jogging in his native ghari drawn by a couple of oxen!
