Dilnaz Karbhary started her career at the age of 19 with one of the India’s leading fashion designer, ‘Tarun Tahiliani’, learning under him for over 16 years heading Tahiliani’s Women’s Wear Couture Business line. In 2010, she launched her own clothing line specializing in women’s wear, called ‘Dilnaz’, which focuses on providing comfort and quality while exemplifying beauty and style.

PT: What motivated you to become an entrepreneur?

Dilnaz: I moved back to Mumbai in 2008 after working for 16 years with Tahiliani. I considered many options of what I would do professionally such as sales, marketing, styling, merchandising, designing for other leading designer’s but none of it could grab my interest. Which led me to wonder if I could start up with my own clothing line by designing beautiful clothes for women. And that’s how I started my own clothing business.

.

PT: Tell us about your brand ‘Dilnaz’.

Dilnaz: We are a close knit dedicated and proud team of 20-35 artists. Pattern makers, tailors, production assistants and embroiders (machine and manual). My designs retain the old-world charm with classic styling and making the client look beautiful. The extraordinary designs are made out of the uniqueness of the client combined with my design experience. Our speciality is designing Bridal Wear and offering comfort and quality to the client. We provide couture or custom made clothing mainly for brides or any other custom-made need that a client may have. For customised clothing, we have a meeting with the client understanding not only their requirements as regards the clothes and occasion, but also the jewellery and other criteria we need to consider in order to make their outfit a perfect fit in more ways than one – in short, everything revolves around making the client look gorgeous. We offer embroidered lehengas, saris, kurtas, casual cottons, mul-muls and linens, which are also sold online and in stores in Mumbai, Delhi and my own studio.

.

PT: What are your future plans?

Dilnaz: I’m looking forward to increase the national and global visibility of my brand as one that upholds the value of hand-made design effort. I wish to make a place for myself as a brand that exemplifies beauty and style in modern India by staying true to its roots by introducing Indian techniques of intricate embroidery to the world. I’m looking to participate in Fashion Weeks in India and abroad.
