PYLA’s Annual Floodlit Volleyball Tourney

On 27th May, 2017, the Parsee Youth League of Ahmedabad (PYLA) hosted its ‘Annual Floodlit Volleyball Tournament’ at the Parsi Sanatorium grounds. Witnessed by a crowd of over 100 people, the tournament was played between six teams which were divided into two groups of three teams each.

The top two teams of each group advanced to the semis. Team Godrej topped Group A with two wins while team Wadia topped Group B with a similar clean record. Team Petit and Maneckshaw were the other semi-finalists. In semis, team Wadia defeated team Petit in a close match, while team Godrej was beaten by team Maneckshaw. Team Wadia won the finals by 2 sets to 3 and were presented the Jimmy Muglai Cup by Freddy Muglai, the son of Late Jimmy Muglai. Rohinton Kavina from Team Maneckshaw won ‘Best Player’; Shezad Babycon (Team Godrej) and Kayan Daruwala (Team Petit) were announced ‘Most Promising Youngsters’. Ahmedabad Parsi Panchayat (APP) Trustee, Marazban Lahewala gave away the prizes to the winners. Boman Munshi and Aspi Hansotia were given Lifetime Achievement awards by APP Trustees, Dr. Armaity Davar and APP President Brg. (Retd.) Jahangir Anklesaria for their achievements in volleyball over a substantial period of time. The teams and audiences were provided snacks by PYLA, which hosts the ‘Annual Floodlit Volleyball Tournament’ since the last 35 years (renaming it in 2012). This was the sixth edition of the Jimmy Muglai Cup, in the memory of Late Jimmy Muglai who was a legendary body builder, a seven-time winner of the Mr. Gujarat title and a regular volleyball player of his Sanatorium team.
