Many of us wonder – why do we need wool in our suits, why not cotton, linen or polyester? Generally, the first thought when we hear the word ‘wool’ makes us think of winter wear – sweaters and overcoats, etc. Even so, wool is used to make summer jackets. Did you know a woolen jacket is cooler than a cotton jacket? It all depends on the how wool is processed and weaved into fabric – that is, you can have a thick woolen suit for winter and a super light-weight woolen suit, perfect for Mumbai’s summer!

So, why is wool used in Suits / Suiting fabrics and not cotton or linen?

Various reasons – wool in suiting fabrics makes it naturally wrinkle-free, resistant to dust, it does not soil fast, and has a natural ability to recover the original shape of your jacket after comprehensive usage. Wool enables us to use the suit for longer period as it always maintains its original cut and shape, while a cotton suit or a linen suit, over time loses its original shape and cut over time. Furthermore, over time, wool holds colour better than cotton and linen.

While a Polyester suit also solves most of the above issues, wool is more economical. There’s 3 reasons to avoid Polyester suits – it lacks a rich, gentle luster, unlike wool; ironing marks / burns are noticeable which render your suit unwearable, making it expensive in the long run. Secondly, Polyester is stiff and lacks the natural stretch that wool lends; and thirdly, and most importantly, Polyester suits don’t drape half as good as woolen suits. And, in all honestly, if your suit doesn’t drape well, it’s not a worth wearing it!
