JN Petit Institute Update

After moving the High Court over lack of precautions and sensitivity shown on part of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) towards the JN Petit Institute, during the construction of the Metro III line, the court has now asked for a ‘Three Member Committee’ to be set up to consider the appeal. This Committee will consist of three structural engineers – one each representing JN Petit Institute, MMRCL and neutral party, Prof. Jangid from Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). It will once again carry out a complete survey of the Grade II heritage structure and submit the report before the court on 29th September, 2017.

Dissatisfied by the earlier structural survey carried out by the officials, this Committee will further establish if the structure has undergone or is at risk of any damages caused, due to the vibrations on account of drilling for the Metro III line. Accordingly, they will inform if any structural support is urgently needed. Speaking to Parsi Times, an official from JN Petit Institute’s administrative office said, “Let them carry out the structural survey. The survey that they previously carried out was null. The new committee will decide whether more protection and structural support is essential for our structure, and will also provide recommendations on how to protect it.”
